Clinical Practice and Expertise

Dr Reyaz Singaporewalla is a Senior Consultant Surgeon with over 25 years of experience in the field of General and Endocrine-Head Neck Surgery. Dr Singaporewalla set up Khoo Teck Puat Hospital’s (KTPH) Endocrine-Head Neck Surgical Service in 2011, and subsequently became the Deputy Head of the Department of Surgery from 2019 to 2020.

  • Received 11 Service Champion Awards over the last 22 years at KTPH 
  • Mastered the technique of Transaxillary Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery, which completely avoids a neck scar in selected patients needing thyroid surgery. This is done at a fraction of the cost of robotic surgery with the same excellent cosmesis and rapid recovery. 
  • Pioneered the introduction of Minimally Invasive Video-assisted Thyroidectomy in Singapore and published his series of the first 100 successful cases in a leading international peer-reviewed Journal, ANZ Journal of Surgery 
  • Has the largest series of successful laparoscopic adrenal operations with a fast turnaround time at KTPH thus far
  • Enhanced safe multidisciplinary management for investigation and surgical removal of adrenal tumours along with his colleagues in Endocrine Medicine and Anaesthesia 
  • Developed protocols for the safe management of renal failure patients undergoing parathyroid surgery 
  • Digitalised the calcium management protocols after thyroid and parathyroid surgery for use across various disciplines and hospitals in Singapore

Education and Training

Dr Reyaz Singaporewalla finished his undergraduate medical training and postgraduate Masters in General Surgery in 1998 from the University of Mumbai, India. He became a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999 and earned his Diplomate National Board (DNB) Surgery Post-graduate Master's degree in 2020. Subsequently, he was selected for the Head-Neck Surgical Fellowship Programme at the prestigious Tata Memorial Cancer Centre in Mumbai. 

He arrived in Singapore in 2001 and earned his MMed (Surgery) degree from NUS, Singapore in 2005. He completed the Advanced Surgical Traineeship Programme in 2009. Thereafter, he was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) Fellowship by Singapore’s Ministry of Health to undergo training in Germany and the United Kingdom. He gained valuable experience and training in Minimally Invasive and laparoscopic surgery as well as Endocrine (Thyroid / Parathyroid / Adrenal) and Breast Surgery under Professor Martin K. Walz and Professor Tom Lennard.

Academics and Research

As the Head of the Endocrine Head-Neck Surgical Service at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery in two of Singapore's esteemed medical Universities (NUS and NTU), Dr Reyaz Singaporewalla has been a renowned researcher, teacher and surgical mentor. He has left his mark in Singapore’s General and Endocrine Surgery field by making astute contributions to more than 30 insightful research publications, which have been cited over 250 times. The numerous citations signal that fellow researchers value his work and acknowledge his profound scholarly achievements.

His dedicated team of surgeons and trainees have also published several research articles in international peer-reviewed Journals.

Medical Teaching

Before moving on to private practice, Dr Reyaz Singaporewalla was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University for many years. He was also the teaching lead for undergraduate year 3 medical students. 

Dr Singaporewalla has been invited to many International and local Surgical Conferences to speak on MIVAT and Transaxillary Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery – a technique he mastered to avoid giving neck scars in certain patients needing thyroid surgery.

Activities and Interests:

Besides his professional activities, Dr Singaporewalla is also actively involved in community service with voluntary non-profit organisations. He is an avid traveller and enjoys playing badminton and cricket. He spends his leisure time listening to Indian music and songs.
